It is with deep sadness we must share the news of the tragic loss suffered by Cindy Boardman, known here as designedbylucinda, a UEF moderator and long time member of the Etsy community.

On Thursday, February 3rd an accidental fire took her home, pets, and claimed the life of her 11 year old son, Kevin. No words can convey the shock and sadness we feel, Cindy is an active and valued member of our community and we share in her grief during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts, prayers and most profound sympathies are with Cindy and her family.

Her husband Robert Boardman's co-workers have set up a fund to assist the family with medical and living expenses. Donations and care packages can be sent here:

And my feelings about them. They've completely eliminated the forums and encouraged us to create "teams" instead. By doing this, they've alienated a lot of buyers and sellers and took the community feel out of the site.

Therefore, I will not be renewing my items on etsy and am slowly moving to Artfire. Artfire has a lot of applications that I like, including being able to purchase items without having to sign up for the site. You can have a kiosk on facebook, as well as a cart on your blog. This alone makes it pretty sweet, and makes me wish I had signed up sooner.

So, I'm experimenting in weaving with wire. And, I'm having a total blast. I'm currently using parawire and copper wire because of the exorbitant price of sterling wire. I created this heart using silver and black parawire. My new addiction may be making keys, hopefully I'll go back to the dragons soon! I have one all wrapped waiting for beads...

So, I'm working on posting more often but my mind is drawing a blank today on what to post about. :) Isn't that just the way it goes? I've been working on items for the art gallery that carries my work the past few days. I finished 2 bracelets and 5 pairs of earrings. And, I finished the bracelet I'm making for this:

Meet Our First Artist: Keith

I'd like to introduce you to Keith, the inaugural artist for this endeavor. Grab a cup of coffee and learn a little about this fantastic guy!

In 2007, Keith was diagnosed with Pleomorphic Rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of skeletal tissue cancer rarely found in adults. In 2008, he managed to beat it back and hoped to live cancer-free but it returned in 2009 and spread further into his system. Undaunted, he continues to fight while raising his two little girls.

An artist as well as an experienced IT leader, Keith has been diligent about looking for full-time employment but has been hampered by his battle with cancer. Because full-time work has been elusive, Keith tapped into his abundantly creative side and has been sharing his artistic talents with the world through his shops online while continuing to focus on spending time with his daughters.

The costs of fighting cancer are astronomical. Radiation treatments are thousands of dollars per treatment. Boosters for the immune system cost $1,100 per treatment. The cost of the oral chemo regimen he is on (his heart cannot handle the stress of IV sessions) is $56,000 per year and while a large part of that is covered through charitable organizations, he is still being asked to absorb almost $2,000 a month in medication costs. There is also the cost of therapy, as the emotional burden of fighting cancer and the other issues it raises are hundreds of dollars each month.

Every month, Keith has to choose between his medical needs, basic necessities such as groceries and clothing, and providing a place for he and his daughters to live. The financial and emotional burden is very high, yet Keith still does what he can to help out others in his own way whether it be assisting them with design work or sending leftover supplies he can't use to those who can put them to good use.

So, now the good work begins! As stated before, this site will depend on donations from people for items to sell and lots of high bidders to buy all the goodies put up for auction. Keith's personal auction will take place from 8:00 a.m. (central) on Monday, January 24th through 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30th.

Cold weather

I won't be spending much time on the computer today, it's 19f here in northeastern NC, and I live in a 200 year old house that I'm trying to heat 2 rooms of with portable heaters. It just doesn't work that well when it gets this cold. I'm going to be spending most of my day snuggled under my electric blanket that I'm very grateful I purchased last month. :)
By the way, this weather just ain't right for NC! Where's my warmer weather? We had snow once, I'm happy. Come back warmer weather! I miss you!

Weave, Wrap and Coil Book

Well y'all I am truly blessed with amazing friends. I was emailed after I posted asking about this book on the about.com forums saying I would be able to give a review for this book because it was being sent to me. :)

I received it in the mail today. I will say that there are only a few tutorials I would not be interested in trying. That is way above average for me. The instructions are illustrations that are done very, very well. They go into enough detail for a beginner, but the designs are still interesting enough for a more experienced wire worker to create. I am so happy to have this one, and I can't wait to start creating!

Amethyst ring

So, I haven't created many rings for my shop. I made this one a little while back, but could never get a good picture of it. I took new pictures of it yesterday, when I was trying to upgrade some of the photos in my shop. I'm rather pleased on how well it came out. This is a very small, delicate ring, and will fit a size 5 best. It would make a great pinky ring! :)

So, what's better than one dragon? Lots of dragons. They're my favorite new thing to create. :)
I'd like to present Rose, Queen of Dragons. There may be other dragon queens out there, but I would tell Rose. I'm not sure if she breathes fire or not...
Rose is rather found of her namesake. She loves the deep red roses and pink roses the best. Who could blame her? She's also awfully fond of any gemstones of these same hues, like garnets and rhodonite.
Queen Rose wants to come home with you, and just possibly take over your jewelry box. She might share your gems with you...might!
Rose is made from raw red brass wire and will age to a lovely patina.

So, we all know sterling wire is way to expensive to use now. I do a lot of experimenting when I create critters from wire, and I can't afford to waste sterling wire. I decided to give red brass a go, and this is my first thing created from it. :)

I hated to use them, because I wanted to just keep them forever (my beads, mine, mwahahaah). It's my own design, I start with wire and imagination. I have 2 dragon pendants (made of red brass) in the works. I can't wait to share them too! :)

Let me present Ruby, Queen of Dragons. There may be other dragon queens out there, but I wouldn't let Ruby know. Ruby is fond of garnets, crystals and copper. All dragons have their own peculiarities. She measures 3 inches long by 2.5 inches wide. The copper rope chain is 22 inches long and included with purchase. Ruby is made from raw copper and will gracefully patina with age. She represents over a dozen hours of work. She really wants to come home with you, but beware! She may decide your jewelry box is her own personal treasure trove...
Ruby came to life as a challenge presented to me by my jewelry making forum friends from about. *waves*
They saw the other wire wrapped animals I was making and said that they knew I loved dragons and should create one. This presented a real challenge, as I cannot draw. I have to start with raw wire and imagination. My first attempt at a dragon wound up being a raven. Darn wire has a mind of it's own!

I was volunteering at the public art gallery in Elizabeth City this past Friday, and everything I touched went wrong. I usually bring something along to work on. Everything I tried to do I messed up, plus I was knocking things on the floor. Fortunately it wasn't artwork, just books and a book holder on the counter...lol!

Who doesn't love purple? I took sterling wire and wrapped these absolutely amazing 12mm multi faceted coin amethyst beads. I then added some sterling diamond dust and 4mm amethyst bead dangles to the bottom. I really don't want to give these up...

My son is constantly reminding me to not care what other people think. He's his own person and if people don't like him, well he considers it their problem.
People have talked about me in my small town because I don't have a job. They think because I don't have one, I haven't looked. (Despite numerous health problems I've put in hundreds of applications over the past 3 years).
He is always saying, "Mom, their life must be pretty dang boring if all they have to talk about is you. You should feel sorry for them."

Swan Song

No, this isn't my swan song! It's just the name I gave this pendant, because it looked like my swan's neck was stretched out and that she was about to break into song.

I hand forged this pendant from 16g sterling silver wire. I then wrapped the edges with 20g wire, and covered them with a wrapping of 4mm white opal crystals. Isn't she lovely? This is my own original design, and it's ooak. (I couldn't repeat it if I tried). The pendant measures approximately 3 inches by 3 inches.

There was a bird trapped in our attic

We have no idea how he got there. My daughter was outside and walked by the window and saw him frantically flying from window to window to try to get out.
We went up there to open a window, and that's when we found out they're all nailed shut. Did I mention we live in a 200 year old house?
I was on my way to go get a hammer when my daughter said she was going to try to catch him. She was able to and walked down the steep attic stairs with him clutching her fingers, and took out to the front porch and let him go.
I couldn't of done it! I panicked when he flew to the window I was at and he got caught in my hair a little.

Backwards Thyroid

My thyroid has been underactive for 10 years. I've been on varying levels of synthroid during that time. Well, the first two years my doctor put put me on unithroid which really didn't work.
For the past 6 months or so, I was getting symptoms of overactive without realizing it. I went to the doctor, she lowered my dose, but I was still getting symptoms of overactive so I stopped taking it. She fussed me out, put me back on meds, and now I'm heart racy, nervous, jittery, crying, and my leg muscles are so weak and wobbly I can't walk at times.
She sent me for a thyroid ultrasound yesterday, after visiting her, but I can't get to the endocrinologist for 2 weeks, because there is only one in my small area. In the meantime, she wants me to stay on the synthroid, and I can't. It's making my symptoms much worse. Even though I'm reading low now, my symptoms scream high, other than the 35 pounds I've gained in 6 months...
Just want some sympathy! /sniff

Well, I've been thinking about my allergic reaction yesterday some more. They do use gelatin in the yogurt, and if it's fish based (which it is usually fish or beef based in yogurt) that could of been my problem. I am deathly allergic to fish, and that would definitely explain my reaction. Anyway, gonna stay away from gelatin and inulin. I think that might be my safest bet...lol! :)

So, I just found out the hard way today that I'm allergic to activia yogurt. At first I burped a little, then I was burning up and then my neck swelled up and my heart started racing and I had trouble breathing/swallowing. I used my epi-pen and called 911, but by the time they got here (10 minutes, I live in the sticks) my oxygen was back up to 90%. Thank goodness for that epi-pen! I still don't feel too great, but hey, now I know I can't have that yougurt. The only thing I can figure out is that I must be allergic to inulin, the only ingredient in there that I haven't had before. After having the reaction, I read this site, which I found interesting...

Wire Wrapped Chrysoprase Bracelet

This gorgeous Bracelet was wire wrapped by me using 5mm Chrysoprase rounds, and lots of sterling wire! I wrapped the centerpiece, and then added some links with some more of these stunning green Chrysoprase beads, and finished it off with some sterling chain, and a handmade clasp. This bracelet would best fit a wrist no more than 7.5 inches.

So, last week I went thrifting while waiting for my daughter. She was taking a sewing class. I went to check out at the CHKD thrift store, and the young girl at the counter asked me if I qualified for a senior discount. I almost cried! I think senior discount there is 55, and I'm not quite 48.
I'm wondering if I shoulda just taken the discount.../giggle! (I wouldn't really, I don't want anything I'm not entitled to, but 10% mighta helped my hurt-ed feelings).

I used to never leave the house without lipstick. Then, my allergies became rather severe, including an allergy to red dye. I haven't been able to wear lipstick in 4 years....
Recently, I found allurebyjen, and I ordered a sample of chocolate berries lipstick from her. I am in love! The lipstick feels and looks great. Many ♥'s to her! :)

Denture Cream Lawsuit

They are only handling the people who were diagnosed with high zinc levels, and Neuropathy.
This was not the case with me. For almost 4 years, I have suffered from severe anaphylactic reactions to almost every food I ate. I had to carry epi pens, and was rushed to the emergency room on a consistent basis for this reason. I was diagnosed with "nerve problems" repeatedly until I finally convinced one doctor I was having an allergic reaction. They dismissed me because I had lost my ex-husband recently and figured I was having nervous reactions from that. I got to the point that the only thing I could eat was organic wheat noodles and organic spinach (I needed the spinach for potassium, came very close to a heart attack according to my doctor, at least once due to low potassium levels).
I lived like this for four years, until my daughter found out about the high zinc levels in the cream. I had quit using it by then, and if I hadn't of it would of probably killed me with what it did to my autoimmune system.
I turned yellow at one time, and my liver started acting up, and I do not drink. I started losing the feeling in my hands and feet, I'm lucky that there was no permanent damage.
After a few years off of the cream, I am doing somewhat better, but I am terrified to try new foods because of the severe reactions I have had previously. (Some grape juice came near to killing me one day, my children were terrified as I was). So many times, so many misdiagnosis, so much trauma (on a daily basis I was terrified to eat, thought the next bite of food might kill me).
I hope the people with permanent nerve damage actually get some compensation for this, and I hope that something like this never happens to anyone else.

PS The ironic thing is my permanent teeth had to be pulled because they were damaged by an antibiotic I was given as an infant to keep me from getting flu, because the rest of the family had it. Yeah, gotta love irony.

I was so excited when I went to walmart today with my best friend and we saw Bead Star in there...I said, "I'm in Walmart!"
My friend replied, "I know I'm in here with you." She saw the magazine too, she was just being silly.

I won first place in the stones category, and we have no local bead store. So, I was so happy to see the magazine I'm in...in a local store! :) It really made it real for me!

Hopefully no one took my picture for that customers of walmart site...

I created this lovely necklace with moss agate leaf beads and tree agate rounds. I surrounded the central leaf pendant with 20 gauge wire wrapped with 26 gauge sterling wire and hill tribe silver beads. All wire is sterling for the wraps in this necklace and the individual links.
I had been debating on how to do the pendant for this necklace for a long time-and last night inspiration struck-I'm really happy with the results! :)

Anyway, I'd been hovering over this amazonite necklace for a week, fondling the beads daily-very anxious to finish it off! I love this pendant-and the necklace-don't you? :)

Turquoise and Butteryfly

I added this to my shop yesterday...lovely val verde turquoise necklace-24 inches long with this show stopping resin butterfly pendant floating from the bottom. The pendant is 2.25 inches wide by 2 inches long-it's glorious!

On a personal note, car still isn't working so the job hunt is on hold until I can get the car fixed...hard to find a job I can walk to when I live over 10 miles from the nearest town...

In the meantime, I'm having fun making jewelry-promised myself I would try to add at least one new item to my etsy shop a day...

My 16 year old boy was home sick all week last week...took him to the doctor and she said sinus infection. But even on antibiotics he was having chills and fever all week. He might of had a sinus infection, but I think he also had something else with it. He went back to school yesterday-and I miss him. But, I'm glad he's better!

I've made a lot of these bangles in copper, but finally tackled one in sterling today. I love this gorgeous focal bead (made by a SRA from the US), isn't it gorgeous?

For the bangle, I handwrapped 20 gauge wire around a 14 gauge core. I love that this style bangle is adjustable.

Daughter's dragon pendant

Well my daughter saw me make a dragon so she finally decided to play with the clay again, and here is the result-she had to show me up by making a much more delicate dragon-lol! :)

This adorable red dragon focal pendant was made by my even more adorable 21 year old daughter-isn't she talented? We both love playing in the clay. The dragon measures 2.75 inches across and 3 inches from the top of the wings to bottom of pendant. The stringing hole is located between his wings. The pendant was made from red polymer clay with copper highlights added in and tiger's eye beads, goldstone and carnelian accents.

Green Polymer Clay Dragon Pendant

But, I finally broke out the polymer clay today and made this adorable little dragon pendant! My daughter's frog pendant sold in my shop this week-we've both been neglecting the polymer a while though-time to get back in gear! :)

To place them in an art gallery! I have been told by friends before that I should put my jewelry in the local art gallery, but I was intimdated by the very thought of doing it! I decided to go in and look around to see what they had...and realized I should not of been intimidated! It boosted my self confidence to know that my work was just as good as what was in the gallery! Yeah! :)

Dragon Earrings

Well, been having internet and virus (self, not puter) problems for the past week so I haven't updated-bad Kitty, bad Kitty! :) Thought I would post a short note today and showcase these lovely polymer clay dragon earrings made by my even lovelier 20 year old daughter...in the style of Christie Friesen. My lovely 20 year old daughter is so talented...I saw this lovely owl cab in a book and I asked her if she could make me something similar out of polymer clay...and she did! She was fussing the whole time she was making it though.../giggle! She does that when she does delicate, frustrating work, but the result was so totally worth ignoring the fussing!

I wanted to try beading around a cab again, and even though I have some gemstone cabs here, I just fell in love with this owl when I saw it, and she did such a fantastic job recreating it that well...I can't wait to use it! :) It will take me a while to finish it though...

Into the Dark Woods Moss Agate Bracelet-or I finally posted something new in my etsy shop! :) And, I'll be posting more later today, my daughter made a lovely cardinal out of polymer clay that can be used as a pendant or an ornament. I am also finishing a chain maille bracelet done up in copper, and then I will break out the clay I received in the mail the other day.

I just don't know what to work on first! I also recently purchased a book on bead embroidery, and I have a chain maille book coming in the mail...so many choices! Hmm...yep, now after re-reading this I can see how I overspent my craft budget this month-lol!

I really think these earrings I made last week fit the bill! :) I shaped the wire and coiled more tiny wire around the rounded shapes, and then added the lovely lampwork bead in the middle (lampwork is by agirlandherglass.net) and I was very pleased with the results! I have the urge to make more wirework, but my polymer clay items are really starting to sell and I am torn...

Good morning! My son's grandmother loaned me her digital camera yesterday, so I can now add more jewelry to my shop! That means I better get to work...lol. Of course, I am job hunting now, and spending so much time being my son's personal chauffeur, I hope I can find time for the jewelry making too. This is a picture of my son I took this morning while he was on the sofa waiting for the bus to come. :)

The job hunting is rather necessary though, I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work in May, and I really need to put that diploma to use, so I can pay back my student loans-lol!

Speaking of job hunting and school, found out that my university charges $5 per official transcript, and I will need one every time I go on a job interview...I can see this becoming rather costly, they still want your money after you graduate I see.

Trying out ETSY Storque Showcase

Well, I missed the day of the regular showcase, so today I'm trying out the ETSY online zine (Storque) showcase, to see how it goes. I am switching out items during the day, to see how many views I am getting, and to see if I will actually make any sales off of the showcase. Keep your fingers crossed for me! :)

The lovely polymer clay seahorse that I had on my last post has been claimed by a lovely lady, I really need to get my daughter in the mood to make more polymer items, she is so good at it! :) She's a very talented girl, heehee, if I do say so myself! :) I'm adding a froggie pendant that she made to today's post to prove it! This froggie idea was inspired by Christi Friesen's beautiful work.

I see it's been a while since I've written...life is hectic right now with school having started back and my son is in band. I have to take him to practices 2 nights a week, youth 2 nights a week, games every other week, and other assorted mom-type taxi service duties.

We were discussing bookcases and therefore books in the ETSY forums the other day and I had to admit to something that I hadn't told my daughter yet....

You see, I've been collecting books all my adult life, although I have to weed them out now & then because umm...yeah they'd take over the house otherwise. My daughter says the books are hers when I go.../giggle! She can't have 'em-I'm taking them with me dangit-what would the afterlife be without my books? Hell, I tell ya!

I just told her yesterday, she ain't getting my books...she may never speak to me again!

But hey, to make it up to her a little bit, I will add one of her items from my shop to my blog today! :)

Sob...excuse my crying but my camera broke! It will still work for distance pictures but the close-up button no longer works-weird...my son says it's been dropped on it's head one too many times. He may be right-he's an expert on the subject, after all! /giggle (just kidding, of course, I work on a volunteer basis with abused children-I would never hurt a child!)

Anyway, I really can't add anything new to my shop until I can get a new camera...therefore the sobbing, as I am broke right now-heehee! Darn expensive children, that teenager of mine keeps growing and needing new clothes and shoes, and then there's the band fees and band camp and youth camp-he costs way too much money. Fortunately for him (and me!), he's a good kid-and so worth the expense! :)

This lovely purple heart sold today. I really need to get back to working with the polymer clay but it's so hot here it would melt in my hands before I could create anything. This particular item sold because I posted on one of the jewelry forums I belong to about someone's purple jewelry set (because purple is my favorite color!) and they clicked on my link to my shop, and purple just happened to be her favorite color too...

Ah well, if it ever cools down here in North Carolina, expect more polymer clay items in my shop! I love working with it, when it's not making a mess in my hands due to the extreme heat. I've come a long ways from my childhood days of play-doh. With play-doh all I could make was a great ugly multi-color'ed lump of clay. If you haven't given polymer clay a try you should-it's tons of fun!
